About
Mekan Arti begins to the 2016-2017 season with the play “The Balcony” on October 1. Ufuk Tan Altunkaya directs the play, staged with a staff of 20 people!
Mekan Arti begins to new season with “The Balcony”, which hadn’t been staged in Turkey for years and written by Jean Genet in 1956. It is about a ‘house of illusions’, where ordinary people come and make their wishes come true.
Growing up in a house of correction, living a life of good-for-nothing by theft and smuggling in various countries of Europe and being jailed, put on trial for theft in 1958 for the 10th time, sentenced with lifelong imprisonment, Jean Genet describes the world through his own perspective in the play “The Balcony”. Redescribing the phenomenon of falsehood and reality through phenomenon of authority – power, “The Balcony” bears the features of a rebellious play.
A house of illusions… A brothel… Customers, came in the rooms of brothel ‘to play’ an archbishop, a general and a judge… Incidents, consist of an uprising and a riot and a balcony salute…
